Your practice leaflet must be on your website: the full checklist

The rule

Regulation 73 of the GMS Contracts Regulations says a practice must have a website or an online practice profile, and must publish on it all the information its practice leaflet has to include. It also says you can’t meet the rule just by putting the leaflet online as a PDF or a download: the information has to be on the website itself.

You must review the website at least once every 12 months, and update it whenever your address, phone number, email address or any way of booking appointments or ordering prescriptions changes.

The list of what goes in a leaflet is in Schedule 3, paragraph 48. Here it is in plain English, grouped the way patients look for things. PMS contracts have the same list, and APMS contracts usually copy it.

About your practice

  • The practice's name
  • The address of every site you work from
  • Your phone number and website address (and fax number, if you still have one)
  • For a partnership: the names of all the partners, and whether it's a limited partnership
  • For a company: the directors, company secretary, shareholders and registered office
  • The full name of everyone providing services under the contract
  • The professional qualifications of each clinician
  • Whether you teach or train health professionals

Joining the practice

  • Your practice area, including the outer boundary, as a map, an image or a written description
  • How to register as a patient
  • Access arrangements for disabled patients at your premises, or what you do instead

Your GP

  • That every new and existing patient has an accountable (named) GP
  • That patients aged 75 and over have an accountable GP
  • Patients' right to say which doctor or nurse they'd prefer to see, and how to ask

Services and getting help

  • The services you provide
  • Your opening hours, and every way to contact you in core hours
  • When you do home visits, and how to ask for one
  • Consultations for patients aged 16 to 74 not seen for three years, and for patients 75 and over not seen for a year
  • What patients should do when you're closed, and how to get that help
  • If you don't provide out-of-hours care yourself, that NHS England is responsible for it

Prescriptions

  • How to order repeat prescriptions
  • Your repeat dispensing (repeatable prescribing) arrangements, if you offer it
  • Your dispensing arrangements, if you're a dispensing practice

Rights, responsibilities and complaints

  • How to make a complaint or comment on your services
  • Patients' rights and responsibilities, including keeping appointments
  • What you'll do if a patient is violent or abusive
  • Who has access to patient information, and patients' rights about how it's shared
  • NHS England's full name, postal address, email address and phone number

Also required on your website

These aren’t in the leaflet list, but the contract asks for them on your website too:

When we checked 150 North East practice websites, the item most often missing was clinicians’ qualifications: we couldn’t find them on half the sites. See what else we found.

Which of these is your website missing?

See your website the way your ICB will. We score it against NHS England's 50-point GP website benchmark and the GP contract's website requirements, and send you a short report with the quickest fixes. Free, whoever your supplier is.

Questions

Can we just upload our practice leaflet as a PDF?

No. Regulation 73 of the GMS Contracts Regulations says the information must be published on the website itself, not only by making the leaflet available to view or download.

How often must we review our website?

At least once every 12 months, and whenever your address, phone number, email address or any way of booking appointments or ordering prescriptions changes.

Do we have to list every member of staff?

The leaflet must give the full name of everyone providing services under the contract and the professional qualifications of each clinician. Many practices also list reception and admin teams by role.
